Limitations: the technology has reached its efficiency plateau; further improvements are marginal. New generation technologies (TOPCon, HJT) offer better performance per square metre.

Limitations: highest cost, limited manufacturer availability, some Tier 1 manufacturers have exited (LG stopped producing solar panels in 2022).

Reference Tier 1 brands: REC Alpha Pure R series, Panasonic HIT series (limited availability), Meyer Burger (Swiss/German premium), Huasun.

Type 4: Polycrystalline and thin-film panels (in decline)

For completeness, two panel types that were common in the past but that we generally do not recommend for new residential installations in 2026:

Best panel choice: the technology matters less than the addition of shade optimisation. Whether you use PERC or TOPCon, install TIGO optimisers on the affected panels. All-black HJT panels with SolarEdge system is the premium solution for aesthetically important homes with shading challenges.

The Spanish geography creates significantly different conditions for solar installations. Panel selection should reflect this.

Costa Blanca and southern Mediterranean coast (Alicante, Valencia, Murcia, Almería)

For hot southern climates or space-constrained roofs: TOPCon from the same Tier 1 brands (JA Solar Bycium or LONGi Hi-MO 6/7). The extra 500-1,000 euros premium is often recovered within 5-7 years through extra lifetime production, especially in Alicante summers.

For premium architectural projects, very small roofs, or luxury homes with strong aesthetic requirements: HJT panels (REC Alpha or similar).
